The
jaw consists of the upper jaw and the lower jaw. It is operated mainly
by six different muscles. It allows hard foods like apples to be chewed
and cracker to be crushed. The precision of the alignment is such that
97% of all people's top and bottom teeth are within 0.5mm of each other
when their mouths are closed. Subsequently, their jaw joints are within
0.2-0.3mm of alignment. Their teeth can feel even items as thin as 0.1mm
being slid between the upper and lower teeth. Thus, because of this
exactness, should a minor disruption in the alignment of the jaw (teeth,
jaw joints, muscles) occur, as in an incorrect bite, the system will
be thrown off balance.
